Joshua didn’t like the bridge, in fact, one might speculate he had some kind of phobia about the whole thing, but he finally made it across. He didn’t care for the city either, it was nasty and dirty, but then again, most people found Bogalusa almost terrifying and definitely nasty and dirty. The police station appeared in total chaos, the epitome of the hustle and bustle of city life. Like so many other big cities across the nation, he attributed it to the enormous plague of violence.

Seth and Nick were eager to meet with him. They led him into a dingy little office that barely had enough room for two of them, let alone three.

“Sorry, this is the only open space right now,” Seth apologized.

They all sat, starting with casual conversation, and then Nick told the preacher he would be recording his statement.

“For the record, state your name,” Seth began.

“Joshua Bennett Delery.”

“Birthdate?”

“Ten, twenty-eight, eighty-two.”

He continued with residence and other essential information. It ended with pertinent information relating to the case.

“Reverend Delery, it is our understanding you may have information regarding illegal transactions performed at Cain & Sons, and you had several in-depth conversations with the deceased, Tyler Cain. Could you elaborate?”

Joshua began, “I guess about a year and a half ago, Jeremiah Cain visited my church, a little church in Bogalusa, mostly African-American. After the first visit to our church, it is customary for the welcome committee to call on a newcomer’s home. Our committee is small, to say the least; there’s me and two others, both women. I’ve found men respond better to men.

I made my way to the home of Mr. Jeremiah Cain. We quickly developed a kinship. He would stop by the shelter sometimes, and I’d stop by his house. On one of those visits, I had the pleasure of meeting his brothers Tyler and Nate. We played cards until almost midnight. We decided to make it a weekly thing. Heck, some nights, we might only play a few hands but chaw the fat for hours. I was around when the ugly stuff started happening. I must say things at those games could sometimes get pretty heated. A lot was goin’ on within the family.” He had a pensive look on his face and adjusted himself in the chair, “from what I gather, it all started at some society ball. The whole family was there, and Nate overheard Preston’s conversation with a business associate. Nate talked to Jeremiah and then to Tyler. At first, it had something to do with some building on Julia Street. After looking into it, Tyler found out Preston had sold some other properties and was in cahoots with some John fella. I think John Harris, his title evades me right now, but he had something to do with the land development aspect of the business,” he ran his hand through his hair. “The fact is, they were forging Tyler’s signature and dealing with some shady individuals, people Tyler would never have done business with, those kinds.
